Where we work
Tree surveys and tree work in Kendal and Underbarrow.
Tree surveys, planning tree reports and tree work in Kendal, Underbarrow and the villages around it.
Kendal is a short drive from our base in the South Lakes, so we work in the town and the villages around it regularly. Tree work and planning applications here go through Westmorland and Furness Council.
Protected trees and conservation areas
Kendal has several conservation areas, and some trees in the town and the surrounding countryside are protected by Tree Preservation Orders. Before any work, we check each tree. Where notification or consent is needed, we prepare it for you.
What we do here
- Tree surveys for schools, churches, businesses, estates and landowners
- Planning tree reports (BS5837) for extensions, conversions and new housing
- Home buyers' tree reports for properties with large trees
- Tree work: felling, sectional dismantling, crown reduction, crown lifting, pruning and hedge cutting
A copper beech near Underbarrow
We were asked to carry out a quantified tree risk assessment (QTRA) on a mature copper beech at a property near Kendal. It was one of the original plantings on the site and a spectacular tree, with great vitality and real character. The owners were worried because a fungus had been found at its base, and a tree surgeon had suggested it might be giant polypore.
Our survey confirmed that the tree was infected with giant polypore, which decays the larger structural roots. The tree stood beside power lines, a minor country road and a neighbouring property. Even though the crown looked perfectly healthy, we calculated a high probability of failure.
We set out the risk clearly: the probability of failure and the harm the tree could cause. The decision stayed with the owners. After some time they chose to have the tree removed. You can read more about this fungus in our article A beech blows over in stormy weather.
