Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas

Many trees are protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPO). These orders are issued by the Local Authority where it is felt that the trees offer significant value to the local area. It is illegal to carry out any tree pruning works on these trees without having permission granted from the local authority. Any attempt to do so can lead to a hefty fine of up to £20,000 in a magistrate’s court.

The Care of Trees can advise on trees protected by a TPO and can apply to carry out pruning works or remove trees if they are deemed dangerous. Our experience working with trees can make it more likely that our application will be accepted.

Conservation Areas are areas designated by the Local Authority to have particular historic and architectural significance. These areas often or not include trees within the locality. Any tree pruning or removal of trees in these areas can result in prosecution. The Care of Trees can give a written intention to the local authority to notify them of our intent to carry out pruning works or removal. The local authority will assess each application on its own merit. Again our experience working with trees can make it more likely that our application will be accepted.
